Mobile internet servers go 3G

July 24th, 2009

Mobile internet is taking a step towards the 3rd generation of cell-phone communication; the 3G (3rd Generation) revolution. With the advances in cellular devices, mobile operators have soon become aware of the potential of their services. Video conferencing, webcam viewing and broadcasting and many other video related services have been made available in many countries around the world with companies such as Vodafone, Orange, Amena and several others.

3G phones are cellular devices with in-built modems that reach communication protocol speed that are 7 times faster than 2G cell-phones. This means that all cell-phones will have the hardware necessary for smooth and rapid web-browsing, video-calling/conferencing and multimedia downloads. This same technology is now being used in the business sector as a reliable and stable form of ‘on-the-go’ communication, allowing people to work more easily and communicate more effectively. At the same time, this advance has caused a significant rise in mobile marketing, because consumers now see a previously unknown advantage that is persuading more and more people to upgrade to 3G phones around the world.
WAP becomes flexible for consumer markets

Mobile internet used to be an expensive luxury for business executives that just wanted to show-off their new gadgets. With per minute charges that were higher than normal call rates (which used to be very high), and content that was not worth the money spent, WAP was an invention not to be admired.

But the introduction of WAP 2.0 changed the face of its consumer market. The introduction of this new and improved mobile communication media, people began to see the possibilities that were just not present in WAP in the beginning. XHTML content is now developed for WAP sites that has the capability to show rich graphic and text content, and with media-player integration, users can download and listen to their favorite music, stream their favorite movies and web-cam chat with all their friends and family using this media. The possibilities are endless. But not only that, WAP has become very inexpensive to the consumer as rates have gone far lower than before due the price competition in the market. Consumers are given choice between per minute payment or per KB payment plans that are both attractive and cost-effective.

The real deal with the iPhone

July 24th, 2009

The iPhone has definitely struck gold in the international market and with a lot of style. The phone, incorporating the very latest in touch responsive technology has no need for a stylus and can be easily used without a hassle. The phone’s features are worth being marketed as rigorously as they have in the past and new upcoming models of this phone will definitely be even better! What has the world come to? We no longer want a practical piece of equipment that connects us with people in different destinations in the world. Now we want much more: The iPhone comes equipped with a very high resolution touch screen that is good for not only moving through menus, but also viewing videos at amazing quality and photos at incredibly high resolutions. Unfortunately the camera phone is not all that much, being only 2.0 Mega pixels, the other features such as GPS and music quality may make some forget about that little mediocrity that Apple has ‘accidentally’ included into their new device for the future. There was one problem that many US customers experienced however: The phone had slightly flawed software that would hang with some multi-tasking functions. This was a problem and many phones were even recalled in order to fix the problem. Apple was successful and continued gaining great profits from their new little marvel.

US market flop Disney Mobile targets products towards Japanese women

July 24th, 2009

As many may recall, LG together with Disney introduced their new mobile phone specially made for the younger generation, in the US. The company expected a great demand for the product especially with the increasing rating of Disney programs and movies in the recent years. Unfortunately this did not go as planned. The younger market in the US just did not like the new flip-phone introduced by the two companies. LG and Disney were forced to make amends by retiring the product from the market. Now, Disney executives are aiming the same gun at a different target. They believe that with the great appeal of their Disney Resort in Japan to couples, and the great demand for Disney products by Japanese women between the ages 20-30 (75% of the total market in Japan), they might be able to pull it off this time. The mobile device itself is not bad at all for international standards and is definitely appealing to many. But the truth remains to be told: Will they go for it? Disney believes they will. The companies (LG and Disney) are in joint collaboration to introduce new colors and varieties in their already existing product to attract different people inside the already existing segment. Different shades in metallic, gold, silver and even a pink ‘Hello kitty’ version will hit the market in Japan pretty soon. The price however, remains undisclosed at the moment.
Motorola: Losing or lost its edge?

Motorola is definitely one of the biggest names that come to mind when we think about mobile phones and other cellular devices. But is it truly living up to its name? The company, known to be the 3rd largest mobile phone manufacturer in the world, is plunging into an everlasting spiral to redemption. Motorola has not come up with a market sensation in over 3 years and there are no plans for any such product to come up in the future either. In the last 2 years, the company’s market share in the international market has fallen from 23% in 2006 to a mere 13% in the last quarter if 2007. These figures tell the story as it is. Their mobile marketing efforts have seriously drowned in the devastation caused by their own ignorance of emerging brands in the market. To throw salt on an open wound, Motorola has to suffer the consequences of their actions. The company suffered an 84% profit reduction in the last one year. This is easier to say than to go through. Whether we think it is because of their blandness in mobile phone aesthetics or their lack of marketing, the facts are simple: They have just not kept up with the technological advances made by other companies such as Nokia, Apple, and even SonyErricson.

Bluetooth marketing at soccer matches

July 24th, 2009

Another new breakthrough in the mobile marketing community is the new services launched at UK English Premier League soccer matches. Teams like Arsenal and Liverpool have started a new mobile marketing campaign that allows broadcasting units inside the stadiums to send mobile alerts on promotional offers that sponsor the team, to all cell phones that are GPRS active during the matches.

The mobile campaigns may include information on the specials at the stadium tuck shops, information about sports memorabilia available at the gift shop and other features that include match statistics and athlete performance records. The service is an optional ‘in’ for mobile users that actually want the services that they are availing and at an additional cost. The advantage to the users is that they will be able to avail information that they want and at the same time, the broadcasting host will be able to make money off the sponsors that will benefit form the mobile marketing campaigns and at the same time create an ambient of technological advantage that the consumers will appreciate.
RingFree introduces VoIP calling for iPhone

A new service launched by RingFree is its new beta mobile application that allows users of the new Apple iPhone to make VoIP calls throughout the world with its new command line-up that works without a jail-break. It is a new feature that allows users to make SIP based phone calls to not only any other mobile phone, but also to any other SIP URL based service such as: FWD, Yahoo, Google Talk and MSN. The service is a web based application that does not require any type of altering to the actual phone. This ‘no-jail-break’ method is to ensure that there are no discrepancies when it comes to Apple warranties and legal codes.

As with other VoIP services such as Raketu, the user has to download a widget onto their phone that allows them to enter the FreeRing network and register on their online database. After that, the user has only to send a message with the contact information in the format provided on their site, and the service connects the two phones together. It is as simple as that. The purpose of this service is the incredibly low cost of actually making calls with it. Unfortunately, this service is only available to iPhone users at the moment, but extensive plans have been made to expand the service to all new market entries as well.
